can i get a 120 day visa for china? will i have to buy my return flight before i apply?

I am Canadian, my wife is American.  We want to spend more than the usual 90 day visa and we don't know where exactly we'll be going afterward.  Can we extend a 90 day visa from within China?

1. Yes, you can ask for a 30 day extension at the local Exit-Entry Administration10 days before your visa expires.2. Return flight is not needed. You need to submit the following documents:  (1) The original passport;  (2) A 2 inches colored photo with white  background;  (3) Registration Form of Temporary Residence;  (4)Proof of  Financial Status.
