You may not apply for a China visa in Hanoi because you are only a tourist there. I heard many visitors get the visa in Hu Chi Minh City. You can try the same, and better contact the consulate dierctly to confirm this in advance.

thanks Joe.... but you are wrong... a tourist can get a visa for china in Hanoi..... I did it 7 months ago and saw several other westerners doing it as well on the same day. My question wass related to getting it on the same day..... I believe now the answer is yes ..... just costs another $30

As far as I know, almost every embassy/consulate of China provide rush and express service for visa processing.

Thanks for your feedback, Nev, about this very useful information. Temporary visitors there can get a visa for china in Hanoi, but maybe not for passport holders of every nations.

Luke......... I'm the full bottle now......... China embassy for visa only opens in the morning... so fastest time to get a visa is 2 days... unless the weekend comes in the middle which is the case for me. So I submitted my app this morning 8.30............ essential is photocopy of your vietnam visa..... australian passport... and of course photo for the application. Tourist visa is $30 for 3/4 days... express costs an extra $30......... so I am up for $60 on approval.
Tourist visa is only for one entry/one month 30 days .......... but you can get an extension for an additional month once there. I did it last year in Oct...... had to go to Shanghai ... and it took a few days from memory. Can do in a couple of other places I know Beijing for one..... not sure how many others places there are......
I travelled up to the border in Heilongjiang province.... great trip, but you would need a translator.

Hi nev, this update is really useful, thanks. Can I just check you did get your visa approved and returned in two working days? And is it right the embassy is not open for applications in the afternoon?
Thanks
Zoe

ZOE.... YES ...THE HANOI CHIA EMBASSY IS only open in the mornings... 8.30/11.30 from memory.... and yes the express visa is 2 days... I picked mine up this morning after applying Friday morning (weekend shut of course) so that is definitely a yes... cost me $30 for the visa and $30 for the express service. When yo go back the next day make sure you are early because it is a bit of a stuff around. You are given a slip which you have to take to a bank about 5 k away (motorbike drivers will take you for 50-100 vnd. ) and you are expected to pay in US $...... a fee is charged for doing so in VnD, although only small...... no master or visa card service is available. I had a letter of invitation to stay for 6 months to do volunteer work for an NGO in Beijing..... but because I was not applying from Australia I was only granted a 30day tourist visa..... I will try again in Beijing and know I can get at least another 30 day visa as I did so last year..... not sure if I can negotiate a longer stay. have a good trip... I'm off to inner Mongolia (ARong Qi) on Wed and Tibet in about 10 days time.
