Australian passport holders go to Shanghai for 5 days, what type of China visa is required?

we are travelling from bangkok to shanghai on australian passports for 5 days then back to bangkok what visa do i need

You need a single-entry China tourist visa (L visa) to Shanghai, you don't need a visa to Bangkok, Thailand, Australian nationals are exempt from a visa to Thailand for up to 30 days per entry.

You can get L visa in Australia or Bangkok.
