Do I need to present my passport when having an agency buy high speed train tickets?

I need to purchase a ticket from Beijing to Qingdao June 27. I needed to present my passport to buy the Qingdao/Beijing ticket. How is it that booking agencies online don't require this information? Thank You.

As I know, you should present valid passport or other certification to purchase the bullet train tickets. Better ask for detail from the booking agencies, may be a copy is required.
