About:Marriage Registration in China

Last October my son got married here in the states to a young chinese woman he met at the local University. Now her parents want her to come back to Hunan, China for a wedding there this summer and have sent us a letter telling us (the Groom's parent's) that we have to pay each of her 30 relatives, hundreds of dollars each. They said we also a have to hire a wedding planner, and have a banquet in a famous hotel for 500 people!!!! It is all totaling over $20,000 USD is this for all Chinese weddings?? As I understand it both parents are teaching administrators in China, middle class like we are here. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Mrs.Luanne, it is normal to hire a wedding planner and have a banquet in a famous hotel for 500 people, it is the customs of wedding in China, but I'm surprised to hear that you need to pay each of her 30 relatives. As I know, all the guests attending the wedding will give gift of money to the new couple, 100 RMB - 2000 RMB per person, generally speaking, the money collected from guests will cover the expense of banquet.
