I think the most interesting and well-known story about the wall is 'The sovereign rulers are fooled by the beacon fire' about King You of the Western Zhou Dynasty. To won his beloved concubine Baosi's smile, King You accepted onf of his official's advice- setting the beacon tower on fire to call in the troops of the vassel states, which did make Baosi smiling. However, after several times' playing, the vassel states didn't believe King You any more and King You was killed by the real enimies without any rescue from his vassel states in the end.
