About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is TWOV allowed if 3rd country is a shorter connection/layover?

Would this be permitted for the 240 hour transit without visa?

Flight from USA into PEK
Spend 3-4 days in Beijing
Flight from PEK to Japan for 4 hour connection, then onwards to the USA on the same ticket/itinerary

I'm concerned that it's not entirely clear if showing an arrival from the US and then an ultimate destination back to the US would be considered a round trip instead of transiting and then not permitted for transit without visa.

I understand your doubts. In reality, it is a layover in Japan that makes you eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Without it, your itinerary would not be an eligible one. As far as you know, the basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). Your itinerary has exactly that - the immediate points in US and in Japan. You should just proceed with your travel plans with absolute peace of mind because there is no a single doubt about your eligibility. Have a nice visit to China.
