No, sir, your friend is not able to invite you in this case. If you want to apply for a tourist visa, you can go through an authorized travel agency from China, like this travelchinaguide. They will send you original invitation and travel itinerary if possible. Moreover, round trip air-ticket, hotel reservation, travelers check are required for visa applicaiton.

Your friend can't apply for a China visa for you in China. You have to obtain it from Ghana or other country where you reside. You can only apply for tourist visa to China, you are not qualified to apply for China Business Visa, Work Visa or Student Visa because you are only invited by a student in China.

You can contact TravelChinaGuide to get an original invitation, which is an authorized travel agency.

If you really don't want to use a travel agency, you can ask your friend to send you an invitation letter together with the copy of his passport and China residence permit. Then enquire the embassy whether it is accepted, then book round-trip flight tickets.

The rule for Ghanian applicants are strict, you'd better use a travel agency. don't think the invitation letter from your friend is enough for application.
