I think the best way from Shanghai to Guilin is airplane. It is a long journey to take train. Whether to stay in Guilin or Yangshuo, it depends on your travel plan. Better to stay in Guilin and go to Yangshuo since the other day morning. Have one day in Yangshuo. If you still have time, you can stay one night in Yangshuo.

It may help you to arrange your travel plan. West Street in Yangshuo is a famous bar street with many foreigners. It is in the old down area of yangshuo. You can just find an inn there. If you do not want to spend the night there. You can take bus after bicycle trip and back to Guilin.
