About:Dual Nationality

My wife was born in Hong Kong when it was under British rule as a Portuguese citizen. She is now a US citizen livining in the USA with a US passport. We have traveled to China numerous times pre 1997. We are going to Mainland China next month. When I handed in her visa application the Chinese Counsel told me my wife was born in China and must have a Chinese passport and Chinese name in order to enter China. My wife was never a Chinese citizen. I was told to return with her US naturalization papers and birth certificate. Any advise on what is going on??????

Thanks. I tried again and they took all the paperwork so we will see what happens when I return next week to pick up the visa. My wife no longer has her Portugese passport. She was young when she became a US citizen they did not reconize dual citizenship and her parents turned it in. That is another story as we are trying to regain her Portugese citizenship. Hard to prove when several generations of family were born in HK

That sound unreasonable. She was born in Hong Kong, but it doesn't mean she had a Chinese passport. Anyway, you can bring the document they wanted and her previous passport to show that she had never been a Chinese citizen. Inquiry to other consul to confirm, perhaps.
