About:China Embassy in Thailand

I previously misposted this same question somewhere else. Sorry for the duplication. I am an American currently in Thailand on a tourist visa. I would like to apply for a tourist visa to visit China. Does anyone know (conclusively) whether this can be done at the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok? I have read some replies on this board that say you need to be a "resident" of Thailand or have a six month visa. But there are some posts on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree boards by people saying they've gotten tourist visas from the embassy very recently (late July). Does anyone know for sure? And if it can't be done in Bangkok, is there somewhere else in Asia (and ideally Southeast Asia) where it can be done? What about Hong Kong? I don't want to fly back to the U.S. just for this. Thanks for any help.

Mr.Andrew, as I know, the China Embassy in Seoul has applied the new rule that applicants other than Koreans should hold Alien Registration Card valid for at least 6 months, but I haven't heard that the China embassy in Bangkok, Thailand also applies this new rule. It is likely for you to get a China visa in Thailand, if your application is refused by China embassy in Bangkok, you can go to the Consulate in Chiang Mai or Songkhla to submit the visa application.

In vietnam, My USA friend can't get a China L visa in Hanoi, however, he got it from the consulate in Ho Chi Minh city. Therefore, going to Chiang Mai or Songkhla is also a good choice if your application is denied in Bangkok.

Good thinking Ms. Helper. I did a quick Google search and came up with this: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/385728-china-visa-increased-fees/ It's recent enough (July 23) that I think I can be confident that the Chiang Mai consulate is issuing tourist visas for Americans. Thanks for the help.
