About:Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

I would like to visit the Chengdu Panda Breeding & Research Center. I was planning to stay in Beijing for part of my trip and Shanghai for the other part. Are any of these two destinations better to leave from? And approx. what distance would I be travelling? Is it best to overnight close or would I be able to spend the day there and return to hotel when I am finished the visit?

Both Shanghai and Beijing are over 2000km far away from Chengdu, Beijing is a little bit closer. That means a 30-hour or so train ride. You should stay one night in Chengdu and better to travel to and back from Chengdu by airplane.
