I am Paul Adams, the son of Willis Adams, a WWII Marine. I would like to see anything that my recently deceased father would have experienced in Tianjin. I am now in Beijing and will travel to Tianjin tomorrow (Sunday, Sept 12th)aboard your high speed railroad, to see where my father might have been stationed while there.
What part of your beautiful city would have been home to the 1st Marine Division in Sept of 1945? Is there an old British installation that the World War II Marines would have utilized or were they stationed in a USA compound somewhere in the outskirts of the town near the port?
He told me before he died last year that although he was not happy to be able to go home to New Orleans after the Japanese surrendered, the Chinese people were very happy to see the Marines arrive. They expressed their gratitude in many ways that touched the soldiers, although the language barrier kept them from saying so directly.
He worked in a bakery in town and I have pictures of the Marines in front of the bakery working with children in the streets.
