Thanks, going to China soon and figuring this out is difficult at best, appreciate your comment, expecially as a long-term China hand!

Just because one chooses not to to tip doesn't mean it isn't a standard courtesy. Tipping is a personal choice that recognizes the efforts of the lowest wage earners(typically) that provide GOOD service, that make that little extra effort to make your meal/tour/stay more enjoyable.

While not tipping in circumstances of poor service is understandable , I beleive in tipping where I have enjoyed good service and attention . To do otherwise is a trait of the 'ugly (insert usual nationality )' . The average income of the Chinese workers providing these services is low and I am happy to share a little of my comparative financial advantage .

Casually tipping comparatively large amounts in countries where tipping is not standard, will lead to the continued perception of foreigners as cash-cows who deserve to pay 'white-tax'.

I'm told that many people still have an average monthly wage of about 2000 yuan. So tipping $1 USD is giving 10% of the daily wage in one go. I would do it if warranted but not casually. Beggars etc. already make beelines for white suckers (many Chinese are more wealthy than you and me but also much more canny).
