I am currently in Beijing at the mo,we visited the forbidden city two days ago,it takes a while to get around the forbidden city especially if it is busy and hot (which it is likely to be both) so I would give it a day to do this and Tienanmen square. We didnt have a guide to get around, but it is confusing so I would reccommend paying for the Audio guide thats available. There is a tuor available that allows you to do the Forbidden city and the Summer palace all in one day with a tour guide which is available at most hotels or online.
We went to the great wall (Mutianyu) yesterday on a tour, which I would recommend as the wall is a good 2 hours drive away from Bejing,we also visited the Ming tombs, had a lovely Chinese lunch, went to a Jade museum,a silk museum and drove past the Olympic stadium all of this was included in the price of the tour which picks you up and drops you off at your hotel,we spent 2 hours at the wall which was plenty as it is abit of a climb. We booked this online the day before with a company called www.beijing-tours.cn/
If you do not decide to do the tour that includes the forbidden city and the summer palace in one day then I would do the summer palace and the Temple of heaven together another day, which we plan to do tomorrow.
I would leave the wall till the last day as it is quite tiring.
If you would like a day free to just wander and explore Beijing, then I would suggest you do both tours and get it all done in the 2 days.
Hope this helps.
