About:Bifeng Gorge Panda Base

I live in Washington DC area of the USA where Tai Shan was born. We loved him and gave him excellent care. I wrote on a couple other of your web sites and am hoping we can receive pictures of him and where is being kept, what kind of care he is given. He loved to eat here and had as much food as he wanted and a really nice compound. Is it the same there. I as well as others here would hate to see him unhappy or not being fed as he was here. We have not seen pictures from your country or any news except in an article which says a dealership purchased him - I certainly hope that is not true, he wasn't sent back to be sold. Information would be helpful. Thank you

He is an adult panda now, so he will be sent to the Panda breeding center to be paired with a female panda, so that they can have children pandas. He will surely not be sold, China have never sold any pandas.

Dear Mr. Pupil:
I thank you for your reply, but the article I first read said sold. I read another and it said Adopted for life and his name may be changed. How much control do the caretakers have over that. Also how come the National Zoo did not have the same option as to adopt him for life, certainly we could have done that. Also will we get updates on his care and perhaps photos posted. I realize he is with others but will he at least get some of the one on one attention he received here. Appreciate your reply. Thank you so much. I think you should know I have worked with animals for many years here in the States and I know how they can regress, that is why I am concerned. Thanks again

Dear Mr. J. Fritz,

I'm not sure which media said Tai Shan will be sold, but it's definitely a rumor. Pandas are our national treasures, we've never sold any of them, while there might be some bad man hunt the wild pandas and sold them, they will get legal punishment, I'm sure. We have many pandas living in the wild environment in Sichuan and Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi, is it really necessary for us to cost so much to take Tai Shan back and sell it?

I don't know why some of your western media keep spreading such unproved rumors against China. Rumor will destroy the friendship between us, and then let Tai Shan never come back to the States, is this the situation these medias want to see, so that then can have more news to report?

As a Chinese, I do understand and appreciate your care to Tai Shan, but as I said before, he is mature now, he needs a spouse, he may have his own children later, taking him back to China is good for him, nothing related to politics I think.

Also I would like to ask: have you ever been to China and see the real situation of the pandas' living? If not, it's unfair to just belive those purposely reports. Pandas in China, some are raised in local zoos with careful look-after, most of them live in the nature reserves with the most suitable environment for their health.

Thank you for your response. My concern and those of the people I have spoken with seems to be the immediate cut off where we turned Tai Shan over and saw nothing. Since there appears to be web sites, I think it would have solved all our questions if pictures of Tai Shan would have been posted immediately in his new environment for all of us to see, and if there could be a web cam of some sort like we had here. You may think he is an adult, and age wise I guess he is, but he is our Baby Panda and always will be so I am sure we would like to see him grow and keep an eye on him even though he is in China. Your people could have seen him at any time, no restrictions, so we request the same courtesy. Thank you
