About:Getting Around Macau

Hi
We just arrived in Macau for a few days inc New Year's Eve. We can't find anyone (inc the tourist board's website and hotel concierges) who can tell us if there will be fireworks on NYE. Why the big secret? Anyone know if they will have them or not? Thank you : )

By the way, taxi drivers seem to only know the Chinese names for places, so for example asking for the Portugese names of places shown on the maps will not get you far. Get your hotel to write places down in Chinese if it is not your native language. Cheers and Happy New Year!

There must be some celebrations this night. I think you could get ideas from the local media easily

Thanks for your input, fyi, the fireworks are not announced, they just happen, or don't, apparently. There was nothing in local English media, but maybe there was in local Chinese language media which unfortunately I cannot read - locals we asked didn't know either. There are International fireworks competitions during the year and with the handover anniversary prior to Xmas also requiring a big fireworks display, there was uncertainty about another one on NYE. Hence my question.

For future travellers on NYE, we were able to walk into a local (Italian) restaurant early on the night without booking but all the big hotels and casino restaurants were booked in advance. Lots of crowds, but good fun to be out. And yes, the fireworks at midnight were excellent. I would recommend Macau for NYE and the Xmas period. Had a great time. This place has so much more than gambling. Oh and I recommend the Pousada de Coloane for New Year's Day traditional Portuguese buffet lunch.
