Hi,Angela.
I don't know who told you that none speaks English in Shanghai. He or she must be joking. Shanghai is a modern metropolis with lots of foreign residence. It is easy to travel around. To transfer between Suzhou and Shanghai, you can take bullet train, or the "D" train.
