I have to travel from Chicago to Bangkok in dec 2009. My flight are from chicago to Shanghai (American Airlines) and then to Bangkok (china eastern). Here is the issue. WHile returning , My schduled timings were 11:00pm from bangkok reaching Shanghai 2:30pm connecting American Airlined at 6:00pm. Now I have come to know thye China Eastern have cacelled this flight altogher for good. The new flight times aqre at 6:00pm reaching 11:00pm. Now I will taking next day American flight 6:00pm flight as I will miss my connecting flight on same day and will be stuck in Shanghai for 19 hours. My question is Do I need a Visa for this. Also Since I am travelling with 3 kids (infsnt 1 year) and 2 kids under 10, What do I need to do as China Eastern has not made any arrangement for overnight stay. Their Newyork office say to contact China office who never reply. I don't want to be stuck at airport for 20 hours. What Do I do make arrangements for overnight stay?

1. you don't have to apply for any visa just for transit in Shanghai less than 48 hours.
2. it is suggested that you book a hotel in downtown Shanghai in advance. The ideal hotel should be close to the Jing'an Temple, where you could take the shuttle bus Line 2 to and from the airport directly. And, it is also easy to have a restaurant for dinner in this region. I know one called Yunfeng Giant Hotel, jsut 3 minutes walking to the shuttle bus station.
