good news to know you will be in Jilin sooner than me, china tourist map are plenty in local book store at very affortable price, it contained all info you may need at specific city, worth more than what the travel agent able to provide. in china, train ticket are very demanding unless you buy it days ealier, and be sure you buy only 1st class so you can rest well on the long hr journey. but air ticket are plenty on any day and the prices are reasonable too, all gound or air tickets can be get from local ticket agent at reasonable commision charged, taxi in tj is affortable and driver are kind and safe to bring you to destination told. security wise, it is very safe in daylight for any one, local police are every where at sight and are very kind and helpful and knowlegeable, if you got any double, just turn to them for useful adise or update. yes, this is my experince in china and i dare travel alone in many cities here. wishing you have a nice day.
