However, having some uni friends in shenzhen, and if i do decide to vist them, would i need a visa to enter shenzhen, can i apply for the same in HK? is the visa time bound ? can i get multiple entry visa? or do i have to apply for it from Australia?

Yes, you need a China visa when entering Shenzhen. You can apply for it in Hong Kong (also in your country). If you hold a tourist visa for China, you can stay in Shenzhen for 30 days. I'm not sure whether you can get the multiple entry visa.
