About:China Visa

hello. i am a citizen UK and i have a flight to tokyo with air china which transits for 3 hrs in Beijing (i.e i fly london to beijing then beijing to tokyo). i do not plan on leaving the airport. do i need a visa? the embassy site seems to say i don't, but i have heard elsewhere that i do. thanks.
