About:Shanghai Travel

Very basic question - I have a regular Visa but not a Chinese Visa. Is a Chinese visa required to visit Shanghai? I assume it is, but was not sure if Shanghai has different rules or is its own province? If so, what is the best way to get a Chinese Visa? thanks

Yes, Chinese visa is required when you enter into Shanghai. No special rules for applying a travel or other visa. Well, I think you could apply the visa from the Chinese embassy in USA, see the information at: https://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/united_states.htm
On the other hand, if Shanghai is just your transit city, which means that you have valid visa and have booked flight seat to the third country and just transut at Shanghai Airport, you are allowed to stay in Shanghai no more than 48 hours without any China visa.
Hope this helps!
