I have lived in Shanghai Haikou Guangzhou and Hangzhou, now I am on a trip in Yixian, I have to say that I am really in love with it, I have never seen such beautiful scenery, a small town surrounded by moutains, and peach flowers, huuuuuuuu~~~~~~ I love this place and I took hundreds of pictures. You can take a bus/train/plane to Huangshan City and then change bus to Qianxian and then take bus to Hongcun. It takes around 7 hours from Shanghai to Huangshan and costs CNY 88-95. The bus from Huangshan to Qianxian costs CNY12 and runs every half an hour. Last, the bus from Qianxian to Hongcun costs CNY2. I think one day is enough for you to visit both Xidi and Hongcun

One day is enough for Xidi and Hongcun, but since you are already in Huangshan, why don't you go to the most famous scenic spot, the Yellow Moutains? So I think a 2-day trip is enough.
