About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I Use 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in China?

Flying from JFK, New York on November 2nd thru Tokyo arriving Beijing on November 3rd, 2026. I am on a tour from November 3 - 9 in Beijing and Shanghai. Leaving Shanghai on November 9th to Tokyo and staying in Japan till November 16, 2026 before departing back to JFK. Do I qualify for the 240-Hour Visa free transit? And what documents do I need besides passport and flights?

Thank you in advance.

No, unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, you have your both immediate points in just one country - Japan.

In order to make your itinerary eligible, you should insert another country or eligible territory within your itinerary. In your case inserting nearby South Korea would be ideal:

US - Japan - South Korea (short flight) - Beijing - Shanghai - Japan - US

As you can see, your possible new itinerary has its immediate points, before and after mainland China in two different countries, South Korea and Japan. Instead of South Korea you can use Taiwan, for example. Hope you will be able to insert this correction into your itinerary in order to make you eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Otherwise, your original itinerary would require a visa obtained in advance. Beside passports and flights you sholud bring your accommodation confirmations. Everyrhing else will be performed upon your landing into Beijing. Have a nice visit to China.
