About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Are Indian passport holders allowed for the 24 hour TWOV

We are two Indian passport holders travelling on China Eastern flights

Our itinerary: - Sydney → Shanghai: MU562, 2 June 2026, arriving 7:15pm - Shanghai → Amsterdam: MU771, 3 June 2026, departing 12:30pm - Layover: 17 hours in Shanghai

We have successfully booked the China Eastern complimentary transit hotel for our Shanghai layover.

We would like to confirm, Are Indian passport holders eligible for the 24-hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV) permit at Shanghai Pudong Airport to exit the terminal and access the transit hotel?
We would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Yes, Indian citizens are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and your itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Here is what will you do upon your landing in Shanghai:

1. Fill out arrival card and tick the box on it where it is written - transit
2. Perform fingerprinting at automatic fingerprinting machine
3. Approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will present your passport, flight tickets, arrival card, fingerprinting receipt and your hotel accommodation confirmation. Here you will apply for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the transit zone of Shanghai airport. This is free of any charge.
4. When you have obtained a temporary entry permit you will head to the immigration and cross it. Like this you will formally enter China and have some time to enjoy in sightseeing or a simple night rest in the hotel.

Have a nice layover in Shanghai.
