traveling with Chinese passport

Please could you confirm if a Chinese passport holder, employed and living in a foreign country, who does not hold a valid Chinese residence permit or hukou (household registration) in mainland China, has to apply for an M-Type Visa if going to China for short-term business activities?

No, you don't need a visa to China for any purpose if you hold a valid Chinese passport.
