About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

10 day transit from Canada

Hello! I was wondering if you could help us to see if our itinerary is eligible for 10 day visa free transit.

Canada (with 3 hour layover in Hong Kong) - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Canada.

I'm scared that they might count layover in Hong Kong to be Country A which would make Country A&B the same!

Unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for any visa free transit scheme. If you want to retain it you will have to obtain a Chinese visa ind advance. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see your both immediate points are located in just one territory - Hong Kong. If you could only alter your itinerary I would suggest you to use Macau. For example: Canada - Hong Kong - Shanghai and for your return Shanghai - Macau - Hong Kong - Canada. Like this you would be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit since your immediate points would be located in two different eligible territories - Hong Kong and Macau. Since Macau and Hong Kong are so close to each other, it is so easy to travel between them by ferry or a bus. I can just hope that you can alter your flight itinerary in order to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. I am so sorry for bringing you these not so convenient news, but it is better to inform you in time compared to the shock to be refused from boarding your flight in Canada.
