Actually, October 8 is not a national holiday or to say it simply, it is not a non working day. It is true that October 8 belongs to a so called Golden week and that means that a vast number of Chinese have their free days to travel, to rest or to visit their family members across China. It is also true that relatively significant number of small shops will be closed, but the majority of large ones will be open. Also, it is perfectly possible and allowed to travel across the border on October 8. You will be granted a Shenzhen 5 days VOA and enjoy your time in this Chinese city. There is no a single reason why would you be rejected if you do not have any previous negative or confrontational situations with the Chinese authorities in the past. Also, it is important that there is no quota system any more and I highly doubt that the situation will be crowded at Lo Wu / Luohu on that day. The price for all the citizenship as far as Shenzhen 5 day VOA is concerned, Canadian included, is 130 CNY (paid by any globally recognized card, being it credit or debit one). When your visit to Shenzhen is over you can return to Hong Kong by taking any border crossing and also any mean of transport. Have a nice visit to Shenzhen.
