About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Husband has a UK Passport but travelling from Baghdad - Shanghai-Hong Kong-Baghdad

HI,
Please clarify that the itinerary given is acceptable for 240hr transit visa? Can the starting airport can be Baghdad? At the moment my Husband is unsure whether he can start from Baghdad with a UK passport. Can you confirm he does not need to come to the UK and then start his journey to China? He wants to go in 3 days so please respond as soon as possible as the airline he wishes to use are saying it is his risk and he should get a visa.
Also, is it alright for him to just get a connecting flight from Hing Kong to Baghdad or must he go through immigration? Is Taiwan an easier option or is it teh same situation?

There is no doubt that a route: Baghdad - Shanghai - Hong Kong is eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Baghdad is just a point from where it is allowed to travel to China. There is no difference between Baghdad or any other airport, although the fact is that currently there is no a flight from Baghdad to Shanghai, in order to fly to China. Also, after his stay in Shanghai area, he can fly to Hong Kong regardless whether he passes the immigration or not. Also, he can fly between any two countries and non of them has to be a country of his citizenship. So, Iraq - mainland China - Hong Kong is definitely and without any doubt eligible route to use 240 hour visa free transit. I understand that this answer arrives to you too late, but this answer will probably be useful for any other who finds her/him in the same/similar situation. It is important to understand that 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) regardless of what country we are talking about. I just hope that he has managed to travel to China successfully.
