It is important to use correct terminology as far as 240 hour visa free transit is concerned because this is not a visa, but just a visa free transit. Also, Taiwan is considered as a territory and not a country. In the end, it is important that your arrival into mainland China is not via Taiwan because by returning back to Taiwan you would not have been eligible because that would be a round trip and not a transit. So, US - mainland China - Taiwan is fine and eligible, but US - Taiwan - mainland China - Taiwan is not. Have a nice visit to China.
