About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

does flight UK-Osaka-Shanghai-Tokyo-UK count as 'transit' in china?

I'm travelling from the UK to Japan, then from there to China for 4 days and back to Japan, then back to UK. would China count as 'transit' (coming from Osaka and flying to Tokyo)?

No, it's a round trip because it's Japan - Shanghai - Japan.
