About:

Trip to China and Japan

Is is ok to fly UK => Shanghai => Beijing => Tokyo => UK. ?

My main questions are:

1. If I get the 240 hour visa when arriving in Shanghai, then I fly to Beijing two days later, will this be accepted in Beijing?

2. When researching this visa I can't find any information from official sources about the change to 240 hours. Is this posted officially anywhere? Also I see are the 72/144 hour options. Do those still exist or not?

1. Your itinerary is perfectly eligible for the 240-hour visa-free transit. It's OK to move from Shanghai to Beijing under the scheme.

The 72/144 has been upgraded to 144-hour and the 72/144 does not exist any more.

I have a question about the link you posted. It has a table that explains the permitted stay areas. When looking at Shanghai (as that's where I go first), it states the permitted stay area is Shanghai Municipality, but surely that contradicts the sentence further above: "Foreign nationals entering China through the visa-free transit policy can make cross-province travels within the allowed areas for visa-free transit travelers in these 24 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities).".

If we can roam between provinces then sure the permitted stay area is all those provinces? Do I need a new tourist visa when I land in Beijing from Shanghai?

That table on the page confuses me

The permitted stay areas are all those 24 provinces/regions and you can roam between them. Don't worry. And you can travel visa-free from Shanghai to Beijing, both of which are permitted 240-hour visa-free stay areas.
