About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel with kids

I have a 10 year multi entry China visa. I travel for work to China. On an upcoming trip that would be US to Beijing (flight) travel from Beijing to Shanghai using the train, and then flying out of Shanghai back to the US, I would like to bring my kids. I’d love to show them China! Would this be an eligible itinerary under the 240 hour program if the total travel time is under 10 days?

Jenn, here we have two different situations. You have a valid visa and you can use a round trip (return) tickets on the route US - China - US because when traveling on pre-arranged visa, 240 or any other rule does not apply to you. However, if your kids do not have a visa, in that case you will have to create an eligible itinerary for them. In other words, the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese visit, have to be in two different countries or eligible territories. Eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. In other words, if you take a direct (nonstop) flight from US to mainland China, you cannot return (I mean your kids), in the same way back, but they have to exit China first to a third country or eligible territory and then from there to US. For example, an itinerary like US - mainland China - Hong Kong - US would be an eligible itinerary or US - South Korea - mainland China - US or similar. In any case, you should just take care to find an eligible, a suitable and price affordable itinerary in order to travel to China with your kids visa free under 240 hour visa free transit. Have a nice journey.
