144 VISA free transit or VOA?

Hi, My family of 4 (two teenagers) American citizen will be Flying into Hong Kong in Dec. and we will first go to Macau and then plan on going to Shenzhen (Futian) On Dec. 28th for 4 days either via Ferry, or cross border to Zhuhai (High speed train) or bus from Macau (BTW, What's the best transportation method you recommend?). We will spent 3 nights in Futian and return to HK (via HK rail) on Dec. 31st and fly back to USA on the 1st of Jan. Are we eligible to use the 144 VISA free transit? if not, are we able to get VOA at Shekou port or via Zhuhai port? Thank you very much in advance for your assistance.

Your idea is doable, but you should do it in the following way:

- You will take a ferry from Macau to Shenzhen, but Shekou port and not Futian. Please, have this detail in mind because Futian port is not eligible under 144 hour visa free transit. Shekou is. Also, you should definitely arrive at Shekou port before 16:00, during the first shift because they are the best informed about this visa free transit scheme.
- Please, have in mind that you will have to buy your train ticket from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Hong Kong in advance, even before you depart from Macau to Shenzhen. You will print out your ticket confirmation and have it with you at hand as a proof that you will be really in a transit. Also, you will really have to take exactly that train you have bought your tickets for.

So, remember, Macau then a ferry to Shenzhen (Shekou port), train ticket from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Hong Kong. This is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you can proceed with your travel plans. Have a nice journey.
- During your stay in mainland China you are free to travel, stay and explore the entire Guangdong province and not only Shenzhen. When you travel under 144 hour visa free transit, then Guangdong province borders are limits to your movement and when you travel on 5 days Shenzhen visa on arrival, then you are allowed to stay only within the city limits.

Thank you for your advise. Yes, I was planning to take the Ferry from Macau to Shekou Port for the 144 hours transit VISA and then from Shenzhen to HK. I have some follow up questions. 1/.When arriving at Shekou Port for the 144 VISA free transit, do we just go to the regular custom counter (international visitors) or is there a special counter we must attend first? 2/. If for some reason the 144 VISA free transit is not granted, there is still a VOA VISA offering at Shekou Port right (for backup) anything we need to pay attention to? 3/. When we leave Shenzhen to HK, we were originally planning to either get a private shuttle from Shenzhen to HK, if I have my private shuttle reservation confirmed, is that good enough for proof of return transit? (I also assumed, I do not have to exit China from the same port we enter (Shekou Port)). Our other plan is to go through Luohu and take the subway to HK (would I even able to pre-purchase a subway ticket from Luohu to HK? or do I need to purchase an express train ticket from Futian to Hong Kong? Thank you once again for your advise.
