Your idea is doable, but you should do it in the following way:
- You will take a ferry from Macau to Shenzhen, but Shekou port and not Futian. Please, have this detail in mind because Futian port is not eligible under 144 hour visa free transit. Shekou is. Also, you should definitely arrive at Shekou port before 16:00, during the first shift because they are the best informed about this visa free transit scheme.
- Please, have in mind that you will have to buy your train ticket from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Hong Kong in advance, even before you depart from Macau to Shenzhen. You will print out your ticket confirmation and have it with you at hand as a proof that you will be really in a transit. Also, you will really have to take exactly that train you have bought your tickets for.
So, remember, Macau then a ferry to Shenzhen (Shekou port), train ticket from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Hong Kong. This is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you can proceed with your travel plans. Have a nice journey.
- During your stay in mainland China you are free to travel, stay and explore the entire Guangdong province and not only Shenzhen. When you travel under 144 hour visa free transit, then Guangdong province borders are limits to your movement and when you travel on 5 days Shenzhen visa on arrival, then you are allowed to stay only within the city limits.
