About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 rule on our way home

"Hi,
My family and I are planning a trip to Shanghai with SAS but intend to fly directly to Malaysia after landing, so a 6-hour transit in Shanghai Airport. Since our return flight is from Shanghai, we will return from Malaysia and spend the last days of our vacation in Shanghai before heading home. Can we use the 144-hour rule then?"

If you are the citizens of Sweden, you can do that.

During your first layover in Shanghai you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit. Since you will obviously not flying on a single ticket, you will have to shortly exit airside area in order to collect your luggage and to perform new check-in. So, when you land in Shanghai the first thing you will do is to approach 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight itinerary. This application is free of charge. After a short check, your permit will be granted and you will proceed to the immigration, then to your luggage and then to the check-in counters for your flight to Malaysia.

During your second layover in Shanghai, you will do practically the same as far as 24/144 hour visa free transit counter is concerned, but if your layover in Shanghai is longer than 24 hours, you will be covered by 144 hour visa free transit. So, again, the permit will be granted and you will cross the immigration in order to enjoy some of your time in Shanghai and also to have a decent overnight there. So, I hope it helps.
