About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hour visa

I am US citizen traveling on October, I will be traveling USA- Beijing then taking a train to Shanghai, then taking a plane to Osaka is this route eligible for 144 hour visa?

No, this is not possible. You cannot have two mainland Chinese destinations in the row, The basic rule of 144 hour visa free transit clearly states that the immediate points of your mainland Chinese destination have to be in two different countries or eligible territories. Eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.

To conclude, you can adapt your travel itinerary to look like, for example

US - Beijing - Taiwan - Shanghai - Osaka

Like this you would be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit twice, in Beijing and in Shanghai.
