My extended visa expires Aug 30, been admitted at new uni from Sept 12,Do i need to exit for new X1?

I have graduated student in China, with an extended visa due August 30, I have been admitted at another university for a master's program commencing September 12. Do I need to exit the country to apply for another X1 visa or I can stay for this period as wait for university's registration to apply for another residence visa? Will I be charge for overstaying?

As your extended visa expires on August 30 before your master's program, I think you need to exit before Aug. 30 and apply for another X1 visa with your enrollment of master program and apply for the residence permit after the entry.

Before that, you may try your luck to apply for a new X1 at local entry and exit administration in China.
