About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

I am British live in cambodia

I want to travel through China by train Via Laos and out via Mongolia.
If I apply for a transit visa, how many days can I apply for and what documents do I need to show?
If I need to show a ticket of departure but I cannot book the China-Mongolia train online, could I buy a different exit ticket but still leave via Mongolia?

Duration of stay of a transit visa usually won't be long. If you want to enter from south of China, like you said exit through the very north, and travel along the way I think you need a tourist L visa. And yes, you will need a seat-confirmed ticket to leave when applying. And you can change you travel plan after getting your visa.
