About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does Hong Kong count as another country of entry for visa free transit?

We are flying from Osaka to Hong Kong. Hong Kong to Shanghai. Shanghai to Dallas, TX
Will we be eligible for the 72 hour visa in China? We will be in Shanghai 2 nights, the day we land, a full day at Disney (staying the night) and leaving the morning of day 3.

Hong Kong is eligible territory and it acts as another country for 144 hour visa free transit in the same way as Taiwan and Macau do. Basically, you can use Hong Kong in the same way as if you would use Vietnam or Germany. So, your itinerary Hong Kong - Shanghai - Dallas is definitely and undeniably eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

You should be aware that it is 144 and not 72 hour visa free transit and here I encourage you to use correct terminology because this is not 144 (72) visa, but 144 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa of any kind. Enjoy in your journey.
