About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

24h free visa transit

I am Vietnamese, plan to fly from London back to Vietnam and will have 16h long transit in Shanghai Pudong airport. Can I apply for 24-hours free-transit to go to the city for sightseeing during the transit time?

When you travel through China, you are traveling on 24 hour visa free transit scheme and you do not need any kind of visa. This is exactly your case and you do not apply for 24 visa free transit because you are flying under or covered by 24 hour visa free transit. Simply speaking, this is your status. Also, those traveling on 24 hour visa free transit are supposed to stay airside during their layover. In any case, you can apply for a temporary entry permit at the transit counter upon landing in Shanghai to be allowed to exit the airport and see if you will be granted a permit to exit the airport. You have to understand that granting the permit is not your right, but more as a bonus that is assigned on case by case basis. Since your layover is a long one, I would say that your chances are very good, so I encourage you to apply for free for temporary entry permit upon your landing. I wish you a good luck in this regard.
