About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Will I qualify for the 144-hour visa exemption?

Hello. Does my trip qualify for the 144-hour visa exemption? I’m from the US and I’ll be in Japan for a few days. I’m planning to fly on a one-way ticket from Osaka to Beijing with a layover in either South Korea or Hong Kong. I’ll be in Beijing for about five days. After that, I’m flying from Beijing back to Japan to Tokyo on another one-way ticket possibly with another layover in Hong Kong or South Korea. My trips would look like this:

One way:
US -> Tokyo (stay for a few days and go on a train to Osaka) -> Osaka -> Hong Kong/South Korea (layover) -> Beijing.

One way back:
Beijing -> Hong Kong/South Korea (layover) -> Tokyo (stay overnight) -> US.

Only the stops before and after Beijing matter. If it's Hong Kong - Beijing - South Korea or South Korea - Beijing - Hong Kong, it will be eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit. If it's Hong Kong - Beijing - Hong Kong or South Korea - Beijng - South Korea, it will not be eligible.
