About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Stopover in Guangzhou - 30 hours

We have a 30 hour stopover during our flight from Melbourne - Guangzhou - Rome. We are both Australian passport holders with over 1 year expiry on our passports. We do not need a visa for Rome.
Are we able to get a 72 hour visa to spend the night in a hotel and look around the city of Guangzhou?
We are flying China Southern - would our bags be checked straight through for the Guangzhou - Rome flight or do we collect them and clear customs before spending time in Guangzhou?
Thanks for her help. Kind regards.

Under the assumption that you have mentioned your all stops within the itinerary, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa.

Your baggage will be tagged all the way to Rome, but you will just check this detail during your check-in in Melbourne for a complete peace of mind.

You are advised to print out your flight tickets as well as your hotel booking confirmation and to have those documents at hand. You will be definitely allowed to exit the airport and to explore the city on your own.
