Can I get a transit visa on arrival or do I need a type G visa before I travel

I am flying to London from Hong Kong with a 20 hour transit in Shanghai. 2 separate tickets and I will stay in a hotel down town so do I need a type G visa from UK China consulate before I leave Hong Kong or can I just get a transit visa when I arrive? What will I need to show the airline that flies me from Hong Kong to allow me on the flight to Shanghai as if I get the visa when I arrive in Shanghai I won’t have any docs to say I can enter China?

According to your itinerary, you are eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit and no visa is needed. You can apply for a temporary entry permit at the Shanghai airport to get out of the airport for your hotel check-in.
