About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Moscow-Beijing-Shanghai-Tokyo

Hi,
4 hrs in Beijing, then 2 hrs flight to Pudong, 23 hrs overnight stay in Shanghai City before the flight to Tokyo. So, it's over 24 hrs. Am I eligible to 144 hours visa free to do some sightseeing in Shanghai and stay in a hotel?

Unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme. When traveling on 144 hour visa free transit you are not allowed to have two mainland Chinese destinations in a row and you have two of them, Beijing and Shanghai. It is important to mention that you will cross the immigration in Beijing, so your flight to Shanghai is a domestic one. Also, your entire transit time in mainland China is longer than 24 hours, so you cannot cover your journey by 24 hour visa free transit.

The only solutions for you are to alter your itinerary or to obtain a Chinese visa in advance. I'm sorry.

Thank you Borut. You explained it perfectly! I am going to buy a ticket now with one stop only in Beijing 50 hours long. As I understand, in this case I will get 144 hours visa free exit to the city. Am I right?
