About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

144 hr visa exemption

Hello, We will arrive in Shanghai on cruise directly from Hong Kong. We will stay in Shanghai for two days and then depart by cruise to Japan with NO additional stops in China. Can you confirm that we are eligible for the 144 hr visa exemption? Also to get the exemption do we have to book a tour?

Thanks!

Yes, your itinerary:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Japan

Definitely guarantees that you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai area and you do not need any kind of visa. Also, you can freely explore the city and the surroundings without taking a tour. A tour is just another way to see the city and your cruise can put a pressure on you to buy one and also insinuate that you need it because of the immigration rules, however the truth is that under 144 hour visa free transit, you are really free to explore the wider Shanghai area at your own will.
