can i take a garmin gps and 2 way satellite messenger in carry on?

I use it for safety and navigation while hiking to text search and rescue in the case of an emergency and i am moving onto NZ after a 7 hour lay over without any need to leave the airport. But i am worried about it being confiscated as i found out satellite phones are banned in china but this has no ability to call, it is just a messenger.
