About:Visa on Arrival

Is there anyway to get the VOA on the proceeding day.

I intend to get the VOA on 23 Dec 23, at the beginning of the long Xmas break.
I expect there will be a huge queue at the VOA centre in Luohu on the day.
Is there a way to get the VOA a day earlier in Hong Kong?
Do I need a confirmed hotel booking to get the VOA?

There is no way to obtain a Shenzhen VOA in advance. The only way is on the day of your border crossing right at the border crossing. I also share your opinion that the border crossing will be quite congested on the day of your travel to Shenzhen and this is a reason why would I suggest you to take the first morning ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen and to obtain a Shenzhen VOA there. You can book your ferry ticket in advance, so you will know that your visa will be issued for you certainly. You should have in mind Shekou visa office opening hours: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30.

It is good to bring a hotel booking confirmation for at least first overnight, although this is not compulsory. If you bring that, it should be in hard copy. One more detail, you should be aware that the price of this visa for UK citizens is relatively steep 834 CNY, based on reciprocity.
