About:Overstaying in China & Penalty

Lost of passport

I just lost my passport in China, and I had to go through the entire legal process to get a new one, including going to the police station, the Public Security Bureau, and the police station again to get a proof of my 30-day stay.
Given that I only have one week left before the staying proof expires and my embassy is still taking too long to process my new passport to apply for my visa, should I pay the fine if I overstay or risk facing major legal repercussions?

It is better to report it timely to the local police station and they may extend your stay proof.
