Fly UK to Shenzen - enter Shenzhen on 5-day VOA - then enter HKG by car

Hi,

Looking to do the following trip, any insight greatly appreciated:
1/ fly LHR to SZX landing 17.25 (Afternoon) local time
2/ clear Shenzhen immigration on 5 day VOA using French/Australian passports (multiple family members)
3/ immediately drive to Hong Kong or take the train there

Questions
a/ is this possible ?
b/ when is the passport controlled on step 3 ? whether by car ? or train ?

Reasoning is flights to Shenzhen at that period are 50% cheaper than HKG so even with a $150-200 taxi ride it still makes sense to fly in to SHZ and then get to HKG by car ... (or stay a night in shenzen and do the same the next day)

In fact, your itinerary is also eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit as long as you take a ferry from Shenzhen to HK. This is totally free but you need to book ferry tickets in advance.
